When Depression Gets Worse

Getting enough sleep, following a proper diet and using techniques for stress management in Rochester Hills can help improve depression.

Sometimes things get worse before they get better. This is a story that most people with depression know all too well. Depression is sometimes prompted by a traumatic or emotionally trying event that takes a great deal of time to overcome.

For others, the cause of depression isn’t so clear. Chronic unhappiness can actually alter the way that you perceive the world and your role in it, potentially leaving you feeling fatigued, unable to sleep and having difficulty concentrating.

Behavioral therapy and stress management are often the first line of treatment for depression, but it isn’t always possible for a person to overcome depression immediately during treatment. Unfortunately, there are numerous factors that can make existing depression worse.

If you or someone you love is coping with depression, then be conscious of situations and environmental factors that could worsen the condition, like the six listed below.

  1. Holidays and milestones: Many people who struggle with depression have a particularly difficult time during certain holidays or other milestones. Someone who lost a loved one close to their birthday may experience depressive episodes that time of year. Sometimes the best thing to do in this type of situation is to remain aware that those days are harder than others, and do your best to prepare for them.
  2. News, media and other environmental triggers: There is a lot of bad news in the world, and unfortunately many people bring it right into their homes by constantly listening to the news on television. For a depressed person, this bombardment of displeasing information can worsen depression.
  3. Poor influences: Negative, corrosive or otherwise ‘toxic’ people can impede a person’s progress while trying to overcome depression. It is best to surround yourself with positive people who are supportive, and to avoid anyone who might tear you apart.
  4. Eating habits: Emotional eating can turn into a downward spiral. Many people eat sugary and fattening foods to ease their stress, only to experience more anxiety or otherwise unpleasant feelings as a result of the indulgence. Carbohydrates and sugars can also manipulate your mood by spiking your glucose levels, so it is best that depressed people avoid these food triggers as often as possible.
  5. Sleeping habits: Depression can severely interfere with sleeping habits, causing individuals to oversleep for upwards of 12 hours a day or experience bouts of insomnia. Sleeping more than eight hours can be damaging to your health, as can sleep deprivation due to insomnia. Try to set firm bedtimes and wake up at similar times every day.
